The Playdate, the quirky yellow handheld gaming console from Panic, is set to receive a second season of games, scheduled for release in 2025. This announcement comes as a follow-up to the device’s inaugural season, which featured 24 unique titles from a roster of notable indie developers, including renowned names like Keita Takahashi and Zach Gage.

What to Expect in Season Two

While specific details about the upcoming season remain sparse, Panic has hinted that it will include approximately a dozen new games. The company has promised a “really cool surprise,” though further information regarding the pricing, the exact number of games, and the developers involved will be revealed in 2025.

During a recent livestream, Panic also showcased the Playdate Catalog, an online store launched last year that allows developers to release games independently of the seasonal format. The Catalog has already exceeded 200 available games, expanding the Playdate’s library significantly.

Among the titles in development highlighted during the presentation are:

    • Bwirds: An engaging word game set to launch on November 26, 2024.
    • Owlet’s Embrace: A grappling hook-themed platformer scheduled for later in 2025.
    • Comet: A cozy puzzle adventure listed as “coming soon.”
    • Office Chair Curling: A light-hearted take on curling, also anticipated in the near future.

    Hardware Availability and Updates

In addition to the game announcements, Panic provided updates regarding the Playdate hardware. The much-coveted handheld console is currently available for order, with anticipated shipping in December. This news comes as a relief to fans who have been waiting for the device to return to stock.

However, not all updates are positive. Panic also confirmed that the development of the stereo dock accessory has been shelved indefinitely, leaving some features of the console’s ecosystem in limbo.

    Conclusion

The anticipation for the second season of games, along with the return of hardware availability, highlights Panic’s commitment to enriching the Playdate experience. As details unfold in 2025, fans and players alike will be eager to see how the innovative gaming platform continues to evolve.
