Amazon is stepping up its game in the membership arena by introducing fuel discounts for Prime members, a move that positions the retail giant in direct competition with Walmart+. Announced on Wednesday, this new benefit allows Prime members to enjoy a 10-cent-per-gallon discount at approximately 7,000 Amoco, AM/PM, and BP gas stations throughout the United States. With fuel prices remaining high, this initiative could save members around $70 annually on gas.

    How to Access the Discounts

To take advantage of this fuel discount, Prime members need to enroll in Earnify, a loyalty program associated with BP and its affiliated stations and convenience stores. The process is straightforward and aims to streamline the savings experience for users. Once enrolled, members can begin redeeming their discounts at participating gas stations.

    Future Electric Vehicle Charging Savings

In addition to gasoline discounts, Amazon has plans to roll out savings for electric vehicle (EV) charging in collaboration with BP Pulse, BP’s electric vehicle charging service. This upcoming feature is set to launch next year and reflects Amazon’s commitment to expanding its benefits for Prime members, especially as the market for electric vehicles continues to grow.

    Competing with Established Programs

This latest perk from Amazon comes four years after Walmart introduced similar fuel discounts through its Walmart+ membership program. Walmart+ members can save 10 cents per gallon at over 13,000 Exxon, Mobil, Murphy, and Walmart gas stations. Other retailers like Costco and Sam’s Club also offer fuel discounts as part of their membership packages, making it essential for Amazon to enhance its offerings to stay competitive.

A Growing List of Prime Benefits

The fuel discount is just the latest addition to Amazon’s extensive suite of Prime membership benefits, which currently costs $14.99 per month. In addition to savings on fuel, Prime members enjoy a wealth of services, including free two-day shipping, access to Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Prime Reading, Amazon Photos, and GrubHub+. This diverse range of offerings makes Prime an attractive option for consumers, aiming to increase loyalty and engagement within the Amazon ecosystem.

    Conclusion

As Amazon rolls out these new fuel discounts for Prime members, it signals a strategic effort to attract and retain customers in a competitive marketplace. With plans for future EV charging savings on the horizon, Amazon is not only addressing current consumer needs but also positioning itself for the future of transportation. For existing and potential Prime members, this expansion of benefits could make the membership even more appealing, particularly for those looking to save on everyday expenses in an era of rising costs.
