Spotify has rolled out an exciting new feature for its Premium users that takes playlist creation to a whole new level—AI-generated playlists based on text descriptions. This new tool, which is currently in beta and available on mobile devices for Spotify Premium users in the United Kingdom and Australia, allows you to input a text prompt, and the platform’s AI curates a personalized playlist based on the vibe, mood, or theme you specify.

To access the feature, users need to open “Your Library” on the Spotify app, tap the “+” button in the top-right corner, and select the “AI Playlist” option from the drop-down menu. From there, users can enter a variety of prompts, such as “songs for a rainy afternoon” or even something more imaginative like “make me feel like a vampire hunter from Blade (1998).” The AI will then generate a playlist of 30 songs that align with the description. You can further refine the playlist by adding additional prompts such as “more upbeat music” or “include more indie tracks,” helping fine-tune the mood or genre.

One of the fun aspects of testing this feature is how well it matches niche prompts. For example, asking it to create a playlist that channels the vibe of a vampire hunter from the movie Blade (1998) resulted in a collection of high-energy rave and techno tracks. Even the playlist was automatically titled “Blade’s Essence,” showcasing how creative the AI can get with its output.

Spotify suggests that the best results come from using specific prompts that blend multiple elements like genres, moods, artists, or even time periods. The AI Playlist feature also allows for more unique prompts such as references to places, animals, colors, movie characters, and even emojis. While the playlists are tailored to the input, users can refine and filter the selections further, making it a fun and effective way to discover new music based on specific aesthetics or moods.

The feature is a refreshing change from Spotify’s previous AI tool, the AI DJ, which creates playlists based primarily on your listening history but offers fewer opportunities for custom curation. The AI Playlist tool, on the other hand, puts more creative control in the user’s hands, offering more flexibility and excitement in playlist creation.

However, the feature does come with some limitations. For instance, it cannot generate playlists based on non-music-related prompts like news events or specific brands, and there are filters in place to avoid offensive or inappropriate content.

While this new feature is still in its early stages, Spotify is planning to improve and expand it over the coming months. As it evolves, the AI Playlist tool could become a valuable resource for music discovery, allowing users to quickly generate tailored playlists that match their moods, activities, or creative inspirations.

Currently, the feature is exclusive to Spotify Premium users in the UK and Australia, but there are expectations that it will eventually roll out to other regions. With new features like this, Spotify could see an increase in demand for its Premium subscriptions, which start at $5.99 per month for students and $10.99 for individual users.

Overall, Spotify’s AI Playlist feature introduces an innovative way to engage with music, offering a fresh and personalized listening experience. Whether you want to feel like a superhero, immerse yourself in a particular genre, or just discover something new, the AI Playlist tool makes it easier than ever to create playlists that fit your unique style.
