Starting in the near future, drones will take off from a Walmart Supercenter in Frisco, TX, with plans to expand to a second location by the end of the year. This new service will cover approximately 60,000 homes in the area.
Residents within a six-mile radius of the supported stores will have access to the delivery service. They can order quick meals, groceries, essentials, and over-the-counter medicines. The drones are capable of flying up to 65 mph, ensuring that customers receive their items in under 30 minutes. The drones use a retractable tether to securely deliver even delicate items, such as eggs and frozen treats.
Wing’s drones are predominantly automated and are monitored remotely. This means that operators can oversee the system from a remote location, eliminating the need for pilots to be stationed at stores or customer homes. The drones are designed to fly themselves, enabling each operator to safely manage multiple drones simultaneously.
